Motorcycle Safety: How to stay safe while riding your Motorcycle

With the warm weather and long summer days ahead, you can bet that a lot of motorcycles will be hitting the road in the coming moths. Whether you are headed to the beach, up-to the mountains, or just taking a cruse around town, check out these motorcycle safety tips to ensure your ride is as safe as possible:

Make sure that you have a Class M motorcycle driver’s license.

South Carolina requires a Class M driver’s license from the Department of Motor Vehicles for all Motorcycle drivers. Always keep in mind that motorcycles must follow the same general rules of the road as all other automobiles.

You Must Have Insurance for your motorcycle.

Just as all cars on the road are required to have auto insurance, motorcycles are also required by law to have auto insurance coverage. While the law allows you to obtain the minimum amount of liability insurance, motorcyclists should also consider purchasing underinsured motorist insurance (UIM).  We believe that UIM insurance is one of the most important types of insurance that you do not have enough of. To learn more about UIM insurance, read this informative article that answers commonly asked auto insurance question.

Make sure you know the helmet law in South Carolina.

South Carolina does not require motorcycle drivers or passengers over the age of 21 to wear a helmet. If you are under the age of 21, then you are required to wear a helmet on a motorcycle. Additionally, the helmets must be approved by the Department of Public Safety.

Even though not required by law, the Goings Law Firm, LLC highly recommends wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle. This will greatly reduce your risk of injury and could save your life if you are involved in an accident. Additionally, the at fault party in an auto accident may try argue contributory negligence for a motorcyclist failing to wear a helmet.
