German automaker BMW is recalling an estimated 1.6 million models of 3 Series vehicles due to potentially dangerous airbags supplied by Takata Corporation.
During BMW’s investigation into the issue, they found that when the airbags are deployed, the airbag inflator in the affected vehicles may malfunction and cause metal shards to fly out to the passenger or the vehicle’s windshield.
BMW is not aware of any injuries involving the affected 2000-2006 3 Series. The same Takata manufactured airbags have affected other automakers, leading to further recalls for companies like Honda and GM. This issue has, unfortunately, proven deadly after two drivers were killed by shrapnel released when their airbags burst in their Honda.
