On July 1, federal authorities reported that fatal cargo truck accidents are expected to increase based on 2015 data in which they have recorded 35,200 fatalities, an article of thetrucker.com reported.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was a 4 percent increase in fatal truck accidents in 2015. Large trucks, or those vehicles that have a minimum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 lbs, were blamed in 3,903 deaths in 2014. One factor that contributed to the fatality increase was more people driving more miles, since fuel prices dropped and the economy picked up. Jonathan Adkins of the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) described the increase as “alarming.”
