A new report released by the South Carolina Department of Public Health revealed that there has already been an increase in traffic-related accidents this year compared to last year, WISTV reported on May 28.
State highway patrol Corporal Hannah Wimberly stated that many people don’t realize how deadly the roads are in the state. This year alone, there 347 people have been killed while inside a vehicle. Cpl. Wimberly believes that drunk drivers and lack of seatbelt use have influenced the rising numbers. Though many of the fatal accidents usually happen on the interstates, another report revealed that rural roads in South Carolina ranked second nationwide in terms of fatal accidents. Wimberly further stressed that authorities are working to save people’s lives on the road–they’re not just looking to hand out citations.
